María Peláe dedicates the funny song Mi Mujer to her girlfriend, Alba Reig

María Peláe

Flamenco pop singer-songwriter María Peláe becomes some sort of Frankenstein to release a song written with her characteristic humorous lyrics. Her new song, Mi mujer, is dedicated to Alba Reig, her current partner.

After the positive reviews received after her performance at the Benidorm Song Festival with her song Remitente, María Peláe has set to work to create a new song with her characteristic humorous lyrics and her sound that hybridizes flamenco and pop. The artist sings of the joy it brings her to have her wife being the one who calls the shots in the house, saying:

It is my wife who rules the house
and the truth is that I love it
It is my wife who rules the house
she knows it and lets me have my opinion

Who is this woman that María Peláe talks about? It’s Alba Reig, a singer who is known, mostly by Spanish women who were teenagers in the 2010s, for being part of a girl band called Sweet California. Alba currently works as a songwriter and producer for other artists, some of them being Aitana, Vanesa Martín or Morat. And, of course, she also collaborates with her partner, having been nominated for best producer in the first edition of the ACAMUS (Spanish Music Academy) Awards for her work on María Peláe’s Al Baño María.

Alba Reig is also the producer of Mi mujer, thus making it clear that what the song says is true. The chorus is funny and catchy and the instrumental has a mix of flamenco and synthetic elements that is striking, without being too experimental. The spoken part of the verses can be a little grating, but it is compensated by the moments when the singing voice enters. The song ends with this sweet verse: “I have this estampita (religious card) that gives me luck / I keep it in my heart / I take it out and kiss it when I'm not strong, / I ask for health and love for everyone.”

In the same way that María Peláe hybridizes musical genres, in the music video for this song she transforms into some sort of Doctor Frankenstein. It is a simple audiovisual piece, but one that stands out for its originality among those existing in this genre. Regarding her narrative, the singer herself said on her Instagram: “The protagonist of this story has a very peculiar job, thank goodness when she gets home, she can relax.”
